Hola, mi llamo José sever, pero mis amigos me llaman Joey. He estado estudiando arte en la Western Michigan University durante 4 años. Mi enfoque para lograr que el arte es muy naturalista. Me gusta poner la naturaleza a mi arte, así como poner mi arte en la naturaleza. Lo atribuyo a que crece en el norte de Michigan, donde llegué a pasado mucho tiempo en el bosque. Mudarse a Kalamazoo sólo ha hecho que me lo agradecerán mucho más porque no tienen el mismo tipo de tiempo para gastar más. Estoy interesado en cerámica y fotografía en su mayoría, pero han estado pasando más tiempo en la cerámica últimamente. Yo no soy muy experto equipo así que me gusta seguir con las obras de arte más tradicionales en comparación a la digital. Es importante para mí estar abierto a aprender más estilos y medios. Mientras que en Nicaragua, que no sea la fotografía y la cerámica, me gustaría explorar la idea de hacer algunas obras de arte en el lugar de las cosas que se pueden encontrar en el ambiente allí abajo. Tal vez incluso un trozo de rendimiento. No soy una persona muy fuerte, o tienen mucho que decir, así que será un gran paso fuera de la caja para mí. Nunca he viajado fuera de la región central, por lo que este viaje puede cambiar la manera en que veo un montón de cosas en mi vida. Tengo la esperanza de que así será. Estoy deseando conocer a todos ustedes y hacer algo de gran arte!

My name is Joseph Sever and I study Art at Western Michigan University. My art seems to reflect my childhood in the sense that that I grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where there are more trees than people and you have no boundaries wherever you go. I try to include nature into most of my artwork because I believe that It is an important thing to have in one's life. Not just for the oxygen, for the tranquility and peaceful feeling that I associate with being surrounded by wilderness. I have been exploring with different ideas in ceramics lately and have taken a liking to hand-building and making human busts. The 3D aspect of clay has really pulled me into trying new things. I also like the idea of working in a more traditionalist manner, such as film photography and drawing in general.
Me llamo es José Sever y estudiar I Arte en la Western Michigan University. Mi arte parece reflejar mi infancia en el sentido de que de que me crié en la península superior de Michigan, donde hay más árboles que las personas y no tiene límites dondequiera que vaya. Trato de incluir la naturaleza en la mayor parte de mi obra, porque creo que es una cosa importante a tener en la vida. No sólo por el oxígeno, para la tranquilidad y la sensación de paz que yo asocio con estar rodeado de desierto. He estado explorando con diferentes ideas en cerámica y últimamente han tomado el gusto a la mano de la capacidad y hacer bustos humanos. El aspecto 3D de arcilla ha realmente me llevó a probar cosas nuevas. También me gusta la idea de trabajar de una manera más tradicional, como la fotografía de la película y el dibujo en general.

One of my favorite artists is Andy Goldsworthy. He is a british artist that makes on-site artwork that disappears over time. He uses things that can be found in nature and puts them together to make breathtaking art around the world.

Hello Joseph, I am Jose, from Honduras. I was wondering if you ever focused on the wandering aspect of your art. I feel that not only is your childhood reflected upon the location of the photographs, but also on the way a kid wanders through a place.
ReplyDeleteHello Jose, I've never really thought about it, but I would say that is exactly what is going on in these photos. They were all taken at places that i grew up visiting on a daily basis as a child. These are places that i have leaned to appreciate over the years. Thanks for the insight!

Deletehola Joe. Me gusta dónde estás ubicando tu mirada: el pasado y los paisajes, inclusive los minúsculos. Creo que hay ambientes particulares en las fotos, claro, dados también por el contexto. Por la limpieza de tonos y la sobriedad me recuerda al director de cine sueco Ingmar Bergman.

ReplyDeletehola jose me gusta como permites que el paisaje incida en tu trabajo, el detalle de las cosas que parecen no tener sentido por el abandono o deterioro(los desechos de pared)nos remite a una historia que tus imagenes intentan congelar. algo que tambien realizo con frecuencia mientras camino, es una forma interesante de reconocese a a si mismo.

ReplyDeleteme gusta la sensibilidad de tus fotografías y el hecho que sea fotografía análoga en blanco y negro. ambas (la sensibilidad y lo análogo, además del blanco y negro) me transmiten nostalgia, en este caso del pasado, pues podemos añorar el futuro también. en mi caso, el sujeto (tu pasado lleno de árboles sin fronteras) en el que te enfocas me hace añorar lo que fue y lo que puede ser y volver a ser también. la magia de la fotografía análoga y la de nuestro realcionar con todo lo que está más allá de nosotros mismos y nuestros autorreferentes es algo que siento vital pero de lo que me he alejado. al inicio (antes de entrar a talleres de arte contemporáneo, TACON) empecé con fotografía digital y antes de eso pasé un buen tiempo con la fotografía análoga en blanco y negro. me encantaba el hecho de no saber exactamente lo que iba a salir, el proceso de revelado (aunque nunca lo hice yo misma pero me gustaba ver las hojas de contacto y los negativos y demás), etc. actualmente me interesa mucho el tema de las maneras de relacionarnos con lo silvestre que poco a poco se han ido diluyendo entre el "desarrollo" de la humanidad. me veo afectada por ese desvinculo; deseo entenderlo, salvarlo.
me fascina lo que dices de poner la naturaleza en tu arte y tu arte en la naturaleza además de el tono naturalista con el que te sientes identificado. en el fondo quisiera seguir una línea igual de "sencilla" y por eso también admiro a andy goldsworthy. conocí su trabajo este año en una clase teórica de TACON y me conmovió muchísimo. que el arte que realice me acerque al mismo tiempo a todo lo vivo y sus procesos es lo que más quisiera. por el momento parto del asumir el estado actual, aceptándolo, evitando cerrarme, y mantener así, a como dices, una mente abierta. por ahí coincido con tu interés por hacer trabajos sitio-específicos y performáticos (los cuales definitivamente pueden acercarte a lo que quieras); ambos me interesan.
cuando tomaba fotos, me gustaba mucho el recorrer, observar, conocer y reconocer a través de la cámara, preferiblemente sola. eso lo veo presente en tu trabajo: la ausencia de un tiempo apretado y de imposiciones ajenas a tu verdadero interés y ritmo.
hace un rato he estado pensando en retomar la fotografía análoga, ahora que tengo más claridad en lo temático. ahora más, veremos...

ReplyDeletei like the sensibility in your photographs and the fact that it's black and white analog photography. both (the sensitivity and the analog, besides de black and white) transmit nostalgia, in this case, for the past, since we can long for the future as well. in my case, the subject (your past full of trees without boundaries) you focus on makes me long for what was and what can be and be again, as well. the magic of analog photography and of our relating to everything that's beyond ourselves (humans) and our human-references is something that i feel vital but from which i have become distant. initially (before i got in to TACON) i was using digital photography, and before that i had made use of analog black and white photography for quite some time. i loved the fact that i didn’t know exactly what the result was going to be, the revelation process (although i never did it myself, i liked looking at the contact sheets and negatives and everything else it involved). currently i'm very interested in the ways we relate to the wilderness that have been dissolved little by little have been diluted among humanity's "development". i find myself affected by that detachment; i wish to understand it, overcome it.
i'm fascinated by what you mention about putting nature into your art and your art into nature in addition to the naturalistic tone with which you feel identified. deep down i'd like to follow a equally "simple" and because of that i also admire andy goldsworthy. i got to know his work this year at a TACON theory class and was very moved by it. that the art i make brings me close to everything that's alive and it's processes is what i most want. for the mean time i start by coming to terms with the current state of things, accepting it, avoiding closing off, and thus maintain, as you say, an open mind. in that sense i coincide with your interest in doing site-specific and performance works (which can both definitely bring you close to whatever you wish); both interest me.
when i was taking pictures, i really liked to wander, observe, get to know and recognize through the camera, preferably alone. i can see that present in your work: the absence of a shortness of time and of impositions foreign to your true interest and rhythm.
i've been thinking on taking back analog photography for a while, now that i have a bit more clarity as to the subject matter. even more so now. we'll see...
