Dear All,

I wanted to address some guidelines regarding collaboratively generated work.  This may be applicable to some of the artwork that was generated in Trace + Gestures  or for other collaborative work you have created in the past or will create in the future.  Some of you have work in your possession that was collaboratively done, some of it may be with your collaborator(s).  There are many ways in which collaborations may be handled; collaborators should address and be clear about authorship of the work.  In some cases, the group members are not interested in issues of ownership/authorship as a political stance because of their interest in circumventing the market system.  In other cases, collaborators may want to keep their rights to the work generated by the group. Either way, it is advisable to have these concerns voiced in the group so that there is a clear understanding of how the work will be handled and credited.  If these concerns were not discussed by the group, or if they were not clear enough you may find the following helpful:

1. A collaborator is someone that makes a significant creative and conceptual contribution to the work.  Work for hire, or volunteers that helped out in the work’s production are usually not considered collaborators.
2. Do not enter artwork that was collaboratively created into exhibitions as individually generated artwork. It must be credited to the group, always, no exceptions.  If there is a name of the collaborative group, use that name, otherwise, use each member's name and credit each individual in the group.
3. Ask all members of the group for permission to exhibit the work that is generated by the group.  If you do not obtain permission, you may not exhibit the work.  In some cases the group gives this permission ahead of time for any exhibition, when it is not, permission needs to be sought for each exhibition of the work(s). Usually, artists do not have an issue with exhibiting the work, unless it is not presented correctly or according to the initial aesthetic and philosophical decisions of the group.
4. If  you already have permission to exhibit the works, you have to inform each member of the collaborative group of the place, dates and duration of the exhibition and if possible provide an image(s) of the work in the exhibition and jpegs of invites or any other documentation, articles/reviews, etc.
5. Any monetary award given for the artwork should be shared equally among the members of the group.  If there is an opportunity to sell the work, the decision to sell, its price and percentage arrangement shall be decided by all the members of the group.

There are many other aspects that come up with collaboratively generated artworks, however, these are just a few guidelines that will ensure that the collaborative work is treated with respect and may help in addressing or clarify any misunderstandings.

Quería abordar algunas indicaciones/sugerencias sobre la creación de obras en colaboración.  Estas pueden ser aplicables a obras que se generaron en Trace + Gestures, así como a pasadas o futuras obras en colaboración   Algunos de ustedes tienen en su posesión obras realizadas en colaboración, o puede que estas obras estén en posesión de sus colaboradores.  Hay muchas maneras de manejar las colaboraciones; los colaboradores deben de clarificar la autoría de la obra.  En algunos casos, los miembros del grupo no están interesados en cuestiones de propiedad/autoría como una postura política ya que están interesados en evadir el sistema de mercado.  En otros casos, los colaboradores quieren mantener su derecho de autoría.  De cualquier manera, es recomendable manifestar estas cuestionen de antemano con el grupo para que haya una comprensión clara de cómo se manejará y se atribuirá la obra.  Puede que estas preocupaciones no fueran discutidas por el grupo, o no quedaran suficientemente claras. A continuación encontrarán algunas sugerencias que espero les sean útiles:

1. Un colaborador es alguien que hace una contribución significativa a nivel creativo y conceptual. Asistentes o voluntarios que ayuden en la producción de la obra usualmente no son considerados colaboradores.
2. No someta obras creadas en colaboración a exhibiciones como obras generadas individualmente. Tienen que ser atribuidas al grupo, siempre, sin excepciones.  Si el grupo/colectivo tiene un nombre, se usa ese nombre, si no, se incluye el nombre de cada uno de los miembros de la colaboración.
3. Hay que obtener permiso de cada miembro del colectivo para exhibir la obra. Si este permiso no es otorgado, la obra no se puede exhibir.  En algunos casos el grupo da este permiso de antemano para cualquier exhibición, en otros casos no y se tiene que pedir por cada exhibición.  Usualmente los artistas quieren que la obra se exhiba y no tienen peros para dar el permiso, a menos que la forma en que sea exhibida no refleje las decisiones estéticas o filosóficas iniciales del colectivo.
4. Si ya tiene el permiso de exhibir la obra, tiene que informar a cada miembro del grupo el lugar, fechas y duración de la exhibición, y de ser posible proveer imágenes digitales de la obra en el espacio expositivo, invitaciones, o cualquier otra documentación, artículos/reseñas, etc.
5. Cualquier premio monetario que la obra reciba tiene que ser compartido por partes iguales con todos los miembros del grupo. En caso de que exista la oportunidad de vender la obra, la decisión de vender, el precio y acuerdo sobre porcentajes ha de ser decidido por todos los miembros del colectivo.

Hay muchos aspectos que surgen con respecto a colaboraciones y hasta los artistas más profesionales tienen confusión sobre la complejidad de obras hechas en colaboración; espero que estas sugerencias sirvan para ayudar a tratar la obra con respeto y para prevenir o clarificar mal entendidos.
