Please join us on a lecture by Artist Patricia Belli at the Frostic School of Art at Western Michigan University. The lecture is free and open to the public, we hope some of the Trace Gestures / Rapaces Traces Alumni will be able to attend and welcome her to the Frostic School of Art. Lecture will be held in RCVA Room #2008

Biography:

Patricia Belli is internationally known for her work with emerging artists in Central America as well as for her own work. Patricia Belli is Director and founder of La EspIRA, a place for artistic reflection and creation. To date, she has brought hundreds of emerging artists from Latin America, particularly Central America, to Nicaragua for an artist residency, where artists of the region work with international visiting artists. Workshops and other activities of La Espira have expanded the role of art in Nicaragua from traditional painting and sculpture to interventions, performances and interactive works in the public sphere.

She is interested in dispelling binary oppositions that constituted the certainties of her youth. Personal and political, female and male, accessory and structure, function and form are all forms of equilibrium now, in which she finds a vanishing point and a refreshing conundrum.

Her work has been exhibited at the Havanna Biennial, Sao Paolo Biennial, as well as in the Central American and Nicaraguan Biennials. She has received numerous honors as both an artist and an educator; her work is exhibited internationally and she lives and work in Managua, Nicaragua.

Patricia Belli formed an integral part of the success of Trace + Gestures: Kalamazoo<>Granada. She was the third professor that was involved in the 25 artist collaborative on-site installations and artworks that were generated in Granada in October of 2012 during 10 days. 10 Students from WMU worked collaboratively with 15 emerging artists from Central America in Nicaragua. She is a gifted artist and an insightful teacher, I hope, through this visit to expose the rest of our WMU student community and our faculty to her important work as an artist and educator.
